Description
Deep Sleep (slow-wave sleep) is the stage of sleep associated with the most physical restoration—growth hormone signaling, immune regulation, and “downshifting” of the nervous system. Wearables estimate deep sleep using movement and heart-rate patterns (and sometimes additional sensors). Because it’s an estimate, the most useful insight is usually how your own deep sleep changes with behavior, stress, alcohol, illness, and sleep schedule.
Why it matters
Deep sleep tends to be more concentrated in the first half of the night and is strongly influenced by total sleep duration and sleep timing. When deep sleep is consistently low, people often feel less recovered, and it can be a clue that sleep is fragmented or shortened.
Common reasons deep sleep trends down
Short total sleep time (not enough “sleep opportunity”)
Alcohol (especially later, fragmenting sleep)
Stress and sympathetic activation
Sleep apnea or frequent awakenings
Late-night heavy meals or overheating
Practical levers
Prioritize a consistent sleep schedule, adequate total sleep, earlier alcohol cutoff, cooler room temperature, and morning light exposure. If deep sleep is low alongside loud snoring or oxygen dips, consider evaluation for sleep-disordered breathing.
